A child of the Southwest and of the 50s -- a woman who knew me well once said, 'Yeah, the 1850s.' Generally culturally conservative and distrustful of new and improved innovative change. Very seldom overtly serious, but many a truth is spoke in jest and all of my truths are. Worked my way through UT when I was up in my 30s. If I'd, by some horrible miscalculation ended up in Bryan, I would've worked my way through that school over there. Have worked all over in printing and publishing. I've held a bunch of jobs and quit all of them but one. I am a journeyman printer and followed the trade and heard its dying gasps as it was throttled by technological change. I had a sponsored blog on a newspaper but quit the job.
Pore ol' Vicad has a story today where something is 'reeking havoc' on something. Reeking havoc is what we have when the pup rolls in rotten crab down on the waterfront and then jumps on the couch.
Imagine that! This is the same rag that glorifies juvenile delinquents on the front page...what else should we expect? If you can stomach it, get a load of Little Mister Editor's blog "retort" to all the level-headed readers rightfully calling him out on the tiles for this (and calling for his little pin head as well...) http://community.victoriaadvocate.com/home/Blog/ChrisCobler/6897
P.S. - I would not consider myself to be in that "10 percent", nor am I a blue-haired old lady! Far from it, as I imagine most readers are. How insulting for an "editor" to even repeat this, even if it were someone else's words...If you have the desire, the discussion forums on this front-page gang subject are worth checking out. I would say, all in all, the readers make more sense and possess more intelligence than our illustrious, ethically-challenged editor, who is, ironically enough, also the head of the VicAd ethics committee, from what I understand. Now we know where the root of the problem lies...The VicAd has effectively thrown journalistic integrity and responsibility out the window...*SIGH*
Shug: Lovely rant. About five years back, a Vicad reporter did an sympathetic interview with the gangster father of a little boy who was killed in a big, indiscriminate shooting in South Victoria. The father did all sorts of macho mouthing about it all. The cops were all over the reporter, saying he had made a slimeball look like a good guy. Kid wouldn't have been shot if his father hadn't been into the gang life.
Thanx, Mr. Loon. That was quite the spouting on my part, huh? Sorry about that....an interesting aside you added. Sure puts the VicAd in an unflattering light starting longer ago than I had remembered. Sgt. Chris Garcia of the VPD has his hands full enough of all these idiotic, silly gang-bangers and wannabes in the area, without the newspaper giving little teeny-bopper brats with a bad attitude and their "clicas" front-page coverage. Chris Cobler sounds like a Fox News gopher defending his rag's "fair and balanced" coverage...it just sickens me. Sorry for the continued rant. Thanx for letting me vent...
